frontiers: Frank van den Eeden on capturing\u00a0Dust\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in the 1990s,&nbsp;<em>Dust<\/em>&nbsp;follows tech entrepreneurs Luc and Geert as they&nbsp;confront&nbsp;their inevitable downfall&nbsp;when&nbsp;their scandal&nbsp;becomes&nbsp;public.&nbsp;Directed by&nbsp;Anke Blond\u00e9,&nbsp;Frank van den Eeden&nbsp;served as the film\u2019s DOP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&nbsp;was expecting the typical rise and fall&nbsp;storyline&nbsp;of an international tech company&nbsp;movie&nbsp;and it wasn\u2019t that at all,\u201d van den Eeden says.&nbsp;\u201cIt was more psychological and more internal.\u201d&nbsp;The script was written by Angelo Tijssens, whose other credits include<em>Close<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Girl<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<\/em>both of which were captured by van den Eeden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnke and I discussed the irony that\u2019s in the script,&nbsp;it\u2019s a film about speech technology, yet the two protagonists don\u2019t understand communication at all,\u201d says van den Eeden. \u201cMaybe they understand the tech and how&nbsp;it works, but when it comes to communication, they are completely hopeless.&nbsp;If people are unable to communicate, then how does that translate visually?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"500\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blond\u00e9&nbsp;wanted to capture the film in CinemaScope. \u201cShe was influenced by&nbsp;Westerns,\u201d&nbsp;van den Eeden&nbsp;says. \u201cI was surprised by this initially, but Anke explained&nbsp;the importance of&nbsp;the landscapes, they were part of this Belgian&nbsp;story.&nbsp;We shot&nbsp;some tests with anamorphic&nbsp;and&nbsp;spherical lenses.&nbsp;We looked at options other than scope, but&nbsp;1:2.35came out as&nbsp;the clear favourite.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like&nbsp;westerns,&nbsp;the universe where the&nbsp;story takes place is so important.&nbsp;\u201cWe wanted to achieve the same effect, but not from tumbleweeds and dry sand, but with mud and water,\u201d adds van den Eeden.&nbsp;\u201cHaving these&nbsp;Flemish landscapes&nbsp;really be part of the scene was very important to us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van den Eeden also points to the contrast between extreme close-ups and&nbsp;wide-shots&nbsp;in westerns. \u201cSergio Leone was a master of this,\u201d he says. \u201cWe looked at this as an element to create tension visually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the film, subtle camera movement reflects the emotional state of the two protagonists.&nbsp;\u201cAs the story takes place across a&nbsp;24-hour&nbsp;period, there&nbsp;is this ticking clock layer that is underneath everything,\u201d says van den Eeden.&nbsp;\u201cWe thought why not use a zoom and have this super slow zooming movement. Even if nothing happens in the shot, a very slow push in creates the feeling&nbsp;of a ticking clock&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;almost like a pressure cooker building tension.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van den Eeden worked alongside focus puller&nbsp;Bart Bleuz\u00e9, gaffer&nbsp;Tom Van&nbsp;Overstraetenand key&nbsp;grip Hans Reynaerts. \u201cIn the script there is&nbsp;a pre-downfall moment where everything is still 100% perfect,\u201d he says.&nbsp;\u201cWe described&nbsp;this as the golden moment in the film.&nbsp;The&nbsp;light is&nbsp;warm;&nbsp;camera movements are very fluid&nbsp;and everything&nbsp;for those scenes was&nbsp;done on Steadicam. It almost feels like a dance in a way.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-1200x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-1200x600.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-744x372.jpg 744w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-420x210.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-1536x768.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DUST_BTS\u00a9Toon-Aerts-56-2048x1024.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then as the&nbsp;two characters\u2019&nbsp;universe starts to crumble,&nbsp;van den Eeden&nbsp;explains that they&nbsp;slowly transitioned to handheld&nbsp;camera movement. \u201cTo&nbsp;make everything more unstable,\u201d&nbsp;he adds.&nbsp;\u201cWe&nbsp;also&nbsp;shifted to colder, cloudier Belgian weather,&nbsp;the kind you&nbsp;would&nbsp;expect in wintertime in Flanders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;24-hour&nbsp;timespan was very appealing for&nbsp;van den Eeden. \u201cThere\u2019s something interesting about following how the light evolves&nbsp;throughout&nbsp;these&nbsp;24 hours.&nbsp;Every scene takes place at a certain time of&nbsp;day&nbsp;and we had to respect this chronology,&nbsp;there is no escape&nbsp;from it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most challenging sequence&nbsp;to capture was the&nbsp;first light of the morning&nbsp;before the characters&nbsp;return&nbsp;to the company.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s the first light of the day and the sun&nbsp;is&nbsp;arrivingfor the first time&nbsp;in this 24-hour timespan,\u201d he says.&nbsp;\u201cThe&nbsp;edited&nbsp;sequence lasts around ten&nbsp;minutes&nbsp;and&nbsp;it&nbsp;takes place on&nbsp;multiple locations. We were looking&nbsp;at&nbsp;how&nbsp;to&nbsp;pull&nbsp;thisoff&nbsp;schedule-wise&nbsp;with First AD Sofie&nbsp;Tusschans.&nbsp;We&nbsp;needed&nbsp;to get the&nbsp;chronology right of what the light is doing, so&nbsp;some of these&nbsp;scenes&nbsp;were&nbsp;eventually&nbsp;shot in reverseorder, which isn\u2019t always fun for the&nbsp;actors,&nbsp;but it was the only way to use a sunset for sunrise and work as much as possible with natural light.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"497\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1200x497.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1200x497.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-744x308.jpeg 744w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-420x174.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-768x318.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-600x249.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1536x637.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-9-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-2048x849.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film also features excessive rainfall, which was at times difficult to navigate during production. \u201cNormally on a film set, the last thing you would pray for is rain,\u201d admits van den Eeden.&nbsp;\u201cOn this film, however,&nbsp;we wanted the worst weather.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van den Eeden relied on lots of wet downs&nbsp;and&nbsp;spraying windows. \u201cWe had a few bigger scenes with rain machines, which are fun to do&nbsp;until you\u2019ve done five takes,\u201d&nbsp;he&nbsp;laughs.\u201cThis was also the first time I used a rain machine on a driving car. So, you had the actors driving themselves, which&nbsp;is great&nbsp;because it adds to realism. Then we had the&nbsp;rain&nbsp;machine mounted to the back of the car and this water spraying in front of the car. We were limited with the&nbsp;angles&nbsp;we could make and if you drive too fast then the wind blows the water away. It\u2019s a mix of lots of elements that you need to keep an eye on, but it was fun to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van den Eeden&nbsp;tested a lot of different lenses&nbsp;and looked at developing a colour scheme. \u201cWe didn\u2019t end up creating&nbsp;a heavy&nbsp;LUT&nbsp;or trying to find a palette that would&nbsp;strictly&nbsp;drench this film in a nineties look.&nbsp;Colours&nbsp;on set were&nbsp;beautifully&nbsp;controlled by production designer Stijn Verhoeven and Costume Designer Charlotte Willems.&nbsp;I wanted to have a natural approach to their&nbsp;colours, scenes could be&nbsp;cinematic&nbsp;but&nbsp;I wanted them to be&nbsp;grounded in realism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"499\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1200x499.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1200x499.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-744x310.jpeg 744w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-420x175.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-768x320.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-600x250.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-1536x639.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.sbcine.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Dust-2026-Still-1-Frank-van-den-Eeden-Cinematography-2048x852.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van den Eeden selected&nbsp;ALEXA&nbsp;35&nbsp;to shoot the film,&nbsp;which&nbsp;he has&nbsp;also&nbsp;relied on&nbsp;for the last few films he\u2019s&nbsp;worked on. \u201cI do like&nbsp;the&nbsp;higher ASA,\u201d he says.&nbsp;\u201cWe&nbsp;used&nbsp;Cooke Anamorphic\/i&nbsp;FF lenses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The car sequences in the film were a challenge, but van den Eeden says the crew were always well prepared. \u201cIt\u2019s important to come prepared because it\u2019s not just camera setups, but also lights,&nbsp;sound&nbsp;and all the other elements which follow,\u201d he explains.&nbsp;\u201cAdd a rain machine into the equation and then do it all at night.&nbsp;On top of that,&nbsp;trying to figure out where the&nbsp;light is coming from when you are driving in a&nbsp;pitch black&nbsp;field.
