Directed by S\u00e9bastien Petretti and filmed on the island of Mauritius, Mo\u2019zar<\/em> Mon Style <\/em>tells the story of Nolwenn, a young girl from the poor suburban neighborhood of Port- Louis, who joins the Mo’zar jazz school founded by the idealistic musician Jos\u00e9 Th\u00e9r\u00e8se. Julien Lambert SBC served as cinematographer on the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien first met S\u00e9bastien during their studies 15 years ago. \u201cS\u00e9bastien often travels to Mauritius, as the mother of his children is from there,\u201d Lambert begins. \u201cDuring one of his trips, a few years ago, he discovered Mozar, an amazing jazz school in a poor area of the city and he was completely captivated by the energy of this place. At this music school, classes take place at an old lady’s house. Students have their guitar lessons in the living room, piano lessons in an old bedroom, while others rehearse in the kitchen or on the balcony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school aim to try and help the young people of these deprived neighbourhoods and music is a good form of escape. It also gives talented young musicians a chance to thrive. That was the starting point for S\u00e9bastien and the project. \u201cSeb comes from fiction and I think he was attracted by what this documentary experience could bring him. Seb started filming on his own the daily life of the school. He was fascinated by its energy, but also by the music level of some students and by the people who supervise this project,\u201d says Lambert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e9bastien\u00a0made\u00a0several\u00a0trips\u00a0back\u00a0and\u00a0forth\u00a0to\u00a0Mauritius\u00a0to\u00a0continue\u00a0to\u00a0film\u00a0the\u00a0daily\u00a0life of\u00a0this school on a regular basis. He was accompanied by a friend producer and a sound engineer. He ended up following the school band to jazz festivals abroad (especially in Brazil) and he also went to Boston to accompany a student from the school who was auditioning at Berkeley. The school occasionally\u00a0travels\u00a0across the world to participate\u00a0to festival by receiving sponsorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt that point, S\u00e9bastien was a bit lost, because he had a significant amount of filmed material, but he no longer had enough perspective to make narrative choices. He called me at that time to tell me about the project and ask me to get involved. Quite quickly, he showed me his rushes and he told me about this school, this neighborhood and hisinterest in making a film about it. I was immediately interested in his project and his passion for this story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was around this time that Petretti first met Nolwenn. \u201cShe was singing in the street, she had a beautiful and fragile voice and this little girl turned out to be our main character. We chose to follow Nolwenn to discover the school through her eyes but also  Roche-Bois, which is a sensitive area with a lot of drugs in the streets.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it came to visual references for the film, photography served as the biggest inspiration. \u201cI\u2019m a big fan of still photography and Sebastien is a very talented photographer,\u201d adds Lambert. \u201cHe\u2019s deeply invested in the visual style of his film and the camera work. From the beginning, he wanted us to be as close as possible to the characters, to truly immerse ourselves in their world. We knew that shooting the filmhandheld would be the most viable option for us. We wanted to be able to get close to the characters because we want to live with them and immerse ourselves in their lives. We tried different focal length to be sure to use the good one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film was shot over a period of six weeks. Lambert, Petretti and Manu\u00a0Saubain(sound\u00a0engineer)\u00a0stayed\u00a0with\u00a0Nolwenn\u00a0and\u00a0her\u00a0family\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0duration.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0were in the house with them from the morning until late at night. We were part of the\u00a0furniture!\u00a0Our main\u00a0concern\u00a0was about finding a good distance between the camera and the people.One\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0most\u00a0important\u00a0things\u00a0in\u00a0documentary\u00a0is\u00a0to\u00a0have\u00a0time\u00a0to\u00a0connect\u00a0with people. There also needs to be a real relationship of trust between the people being filmed and the film crew. We were lucky enough that things went very easily, Nolwenn’s family opened their\u00a0door\u00a0to\u00a0us\u00a0and we were very welcomed. It was the same in\u00a0Mozar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visual identity of the film was shaped by natural lights and the colours of the island and the metallic textures of the neighbourhood. \u201cAs you can see in the movie, the houses at Roche Bois are made of corrugated paint iron. Francois Dubois (colour grader) did an incredible job enhancing these elements and finding a rich and expressive palette, that brought the story to life. During the color grading we spent quite a lot of time finding the right shades of colours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u00a0made\u00a0the\u00a0choice\u00a0not\u00a0to\u00a0use\u00a0additional\u00a0light\u00a0sources\u00a0in\u00a0Nolwenn’s\u00a0house\u00a0at\u00a0night,\u201d continues Lambert.\u00a0\u201cThey don’t\u00a0have\u00a0electricity,\u00a0which\u00a0is\u00a0why\u00a0Nolwenn\u00a0can’t\u00a0play\u00a0her electric\u00a0piano\u00a0in\u00a0one\u00a0sequence of the film. We preferred showing the darkness of the evenings and that they ate by candlelight or sometimes with a small LED source which recharges with\u00a0sunlight\u00a0and which gave rise to a beautiful sequence when the two little girls play behind a\u00a0curtain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lambert\u00a0captured\u00a0the\u00a0film\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Sony\u00a0FX9.\u00a0\u201cSince\u00a0we\u00a0were\u00a0shooting\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0small budget, we used the FX9 as it\u00a0is\u00a0small and lightweight for handheld shooting. I also used some diffusion\u00a0filters\u00a0on\u00a0Canon\u00a0Lenses\u00a0to\u00a0remove\u00a0a\u00a0bit\u00a0of\u00a0sharpness\u00a0and\u00a0give\u00a0a\u00a0bit of\u00a0texture. It was the first time that S\u00e9bastien was working with this camera. We did some preliminary\u00a0tests\u00a0and he was surprised by the quality. I shot mostly in full frame mode because\u00a0we\u00a0were\u00a0often\u00a0shooting\u00a0in\u00a0small\u00a0rooms.\u00a0The\u00a0dual\u00a0iso\u00a0mode\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0FX9 was\u00a0also definitely an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One particularly striking sequence sees Nolwenn on stage during the final live performance. Capturing the scene was a challenge for Lambert as it was a live event and\u00a0left\u00a0little\u00a0room\u00a0for\u00a0planning.\u00a0We\u00a0wanted\u00a0to\u00a0film\u00a0Nolwenn’s\u00a0first\u00a0steps\u00a0on\u00a0stage in front of an audience. We chose to stay with her, even if it meant not having a wide shot of\u00a0this\u00a0large\u00a0hall\u00a0in\u00a0Port-Louis.\u00a0That’s\u00a0why\u00a0I\u00a0stay\u00a0behind\u00a0her\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0shoulder\u00a0shot\u00a0and it’s the\u00a0sound\u00a0that\u00a0tells\u00a0the\u00a0story.\u00a0There\u00a0was\u00a0no\u00a0room\u00a0for\u00a0error\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0think\u00a0it\u00a0worked\u00a0out pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was very interesting to live alongside a 12 year old girl in that neighbourhood,\u201dLambert concludes. \u201cIt was about following her and seeing what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
